    How We Work

Three steps. A clear path from issue to execution.

Every engagement — from a single contract to embedded outside counsel — runs the same disciplined path.

    01

    Diagnose

On a short call we identify the least reversible decision, the real deadline, and the risks that actually move the outcome.

    02

    Scope

You get a written fixed-fee scope before any work begins — what's included, what's not, and what would change it.

    03

    Execute

The principal owns the work end-to-end, with senior judgment on strategy, drafting, negotiation, and the final deliverable.

    The Work, In Public

We publish the playbook we use on every matter.

Direct answers, clause-by-clause deal walkthroughs, and side-by-side decisions for the operators we serve. No gated PDFs — read the work, then book the call.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What does a matter actually cost?

Most work is quoted as a fixed fee against a defined scope — you see the number before any work begins, and it does not move unless the scope does. Ongoing counsel runs on a monthly retainer sized to the company. Where fixed-fee genuinely doesn't fit (open-ended disputes, litigation posture, novel regulatory work), we'll quote hourly with a not-to-exceed estimate so you're never surprised by an invoice.

Why hire a boutique instead of a larger firm?

At a larger firm, your matter is routed to a partner you met once and pushed down a chain of associates billing in six-minute increments. At Jacobs Counsel, the principal owns the strategy, the judgment, and the final word on every deliverable. AI-augmented workflows handle the research and first drafts so the time you pay for is spent where it actually moves terms.

Can you really cover sports, gaming, and tech under one roof?

Yes. The clients we serve almost always need more than one of those at once. A college athlete signing a House revenue-share deal needs the contract reviewed, the IP protected, and the first money structured before it lands. A gaming founder needs the regulatory opinion, the operating agreement, and the customer terms. Running those workstreams through one principal keeps the strategy consistent and the timeline tight.

What happens on the strategy call?

Fifteen minutes, no pitch. You walk through the situation, Drew tells you what he would do about it and what it would cost, and if Jacobs Counsel is not the right fit he will say so and point you somewhere that is. Most calls end with either a clear scope and quote or a short list of things you can handle on your own.

Can you help with NCAA House settlement revenue share deals?

Yes. This is a core focus. We review and negotiate NIL revenue share agreements under the NCAA House settlement framework, making sure athletes understand roster guarantees, revenue splits, and transfer portal implications before signing.

I'm a financial advisor — how do we work together?

We partner with RIAs, family offices, and wealth managers to handle the business and IP legal execution for your clients — entity structuring, contracts, brand protection, NIL deals, and gaming compliance. You stay the quarterback. (Estate planning is handled through our sister practice, Legacy Counsel by Jacobs Counsel.)
